St George's Day

It's April 23rd, and it's St George's Day. St George is the patron saint of England (amongst other things) and this is widely recognised as England's 'national day'.

So why aren't we celebrating it?

The Prime Minister has talked a lot about 'Britishness', but what does this mean to you?

I want to know how you think we should be celebrating St George's Day, how you're marking the occasion, or in fact whether you think we should celebrate it at all.

Is it wrong to celebrate England when there are so many people of other nationalities living here?

Tell me what you think by using the comment features on this page!

Paul.

I am in oppositition to the current planned development of the Black Lion Sports Centre. It proposed use for Olympians and Benefit to Nearby colleges robs local folk of their only multipurpos playing field. The Area of North Gillingham is already short of resident facilties. Local schools hold sports days on the reduced in size Hilly fields, which on exists due to the wwork of Voluteers. Local children play in caged area's in Britton Farm Street, and Skinner Street. The Nearby Mid Kent College has no Parking for Students, The Black Lion has no extra Parkinh Planned and The New Police Station also has parking issues. Residents will be forced into a pay for parking Zone which is already over subscribed. In Strood there is a sports centre under used. Refurb the Black Lion, Yes. Communtee Loss No!.

We are multi cultural now, and that isnt a bad thing, it helps us to to understand other cultures and be part of them if we wish to, but we should not forget our own British traditions. Marking St George's Day is a very good idea. In America you see the flags flying all the time, I shall have one on my car to support England at the Olympics. So let us not forget that England has hundreds of years of history.

I am fully supportive of a national holiday for St George's Day. I think that it is a matter of national identity - yes we are British and yes we are also a multicultural society, but the majority of people in England are at the very least British, if not English. I don't think that there is anything wrong in celebrating St George's Day whilst we have people of other nationalities living side-by-side with us - if they are as happy to live here and as proud of living here as we are, then there is nothing to stop them joining in the celebrations. It all comes back to celebrating diversity, being proud of being English and celebrating that on St George's Day then allowing people of other nationalities to celebrate their heritage where, and when, appropriate. To me that means a national holiday on St George's Day, during which communities can decide how they want to celebrate individually with (as your poll suggests) street parties, civic ceremonies etc.

Bank holiday next year please! I think some people would say it is strange to celebrate it though when a lot of people here aren't english and wouldn't want to do it. can't force them to take part but we should be positive about the country and they should want to take part of their own accord!!
